Dealing with unwanted startup modes

Unwanted Mac OS X startup modes - USA

print this article

In certain situations, a Mac OS X system may act like a specific keyboard shortcut was being pressed at startup when it actually isn't. This can cause any of the following:

  • The screen being filled with scrolling text, which disappears on its own before computer starts up normally.
  • A text screen appears, which proceeds to a line containing root# and stops there.
  • A screen appearing which contains three or more buttons, one for each bootable disk available to the computer, and two others with arrows, one of which is in a circle and the other straight.
  • The computer consistently starting up into safe mode.

This issue can happen spontaneously, or through setting the shortcut in an application such as OnyX, or through the Terminal. If it does happen, it can be gotten rid of by restarting the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and then releasing the keys after the second startup chime or 10 seconds.
